Young People’s Voices at Calthorpe Academy

Calthorpe Academy was pleased to welcome Lakhvir Sahota, Participation and Co-Production Officer from the Children and Families Directorate, for a young people’s engagement session focused on improving the Local Offer website.

Lakhvir praised both the school and the young people for their openness and confidence:
“I was super impressed with all the really good work that is happening at Calthorpe Academy. Please pass on my thanks to the young people who shared their thoughts and experiences.”

What Young People Shared
Young people spoke clearly about how websites should be easier to use for everyone:
  • More symbols, pictures and voice support
  • Simple videos or “press play” guides
  • Clear pictures first, with less text
One young person said:
“If you can’t use it, why have it?”
They also asked for:
  • Clearer maps and easier navigation
  • “Things to Do” to be easier to find
  • More games, videos and interactive content
  • Better support for feelings and wellbeing
Young people particularly liked pages that used videos to explain information clearly.

Moving Forward

The feedback will be used to improve accessibility, design and content so the Local Offer is easier for children, young people and families to understand and use.

We thank Lakhvir Sahota for his support and are very proud of our young people for sharing their views and helping shape positive change.
